Zoological

‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4: 18-19

Taylor and I went to the zoo one Saturday while Bobby was out of town. Ok, that is weird that when Bobby goes to the US that he is out of town. Well, back to the zoo. The day was absolutely gorgeous and no rain. The animals were actually resting in the shade because of the warmth of the sun. We saw lions, elephants, bears, different kinds of monkeys, llamas, panthers, beautiful birds, snakes, and many animals we had never seen or heard of. There was also a place where they had rabbits, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, and roosters. We found that very interesting since we see these animals a lot in the US. The most interesting animal that we saw was not even part of the zoo, it was a caterpillar on a tree next to the hipos. It was an amazing caterpillar and it was free. The zoo was beautiful and the animals were amazing, but when I really started to think about them it struck me that they were all in captivity, never to know the freedom of their real homes. They weren’t bothered by it because it was all they knew and they seemed quite happy until you really looked long and hard and then you could see that they were slow and cramped in their small environments. 

God showed me that He came to set the captives free – all those who are living in their own prisons and don’t even know it. We see them every day and visit them in their prisons but do we ever tell them about the One who came to set them free – free indeed? Like the caterpillar, we, as followers of Christ, are free from captivity, never to be snatched from the hand of God. And someday when we meet him face to face we will be more beautiful than even the butterfly…
