The Place, the People, and the Plan

Updated: 1 day ago

As we share our missions journey, the question at the heart of every conversation is the same. What are you going to do in Guatemala?

Our ministry strategy is to create strong relationships with Guatemalan churches and Christian organizations, building greater capacity through the global body of Christ.  There are four established churches in the region, and our support will begin with these pastors and their congregations.  We hope to build capacity in individual churches and strong relational connections between churches.

We will offer pastoral care, to include seasons of respite and sabbatical, as well as church planting support and personal discipleship.  Our work will consist of mentoring pastors, developing leaders, ensuring sound doctrine, providing accountability, offering counsel, and striving for unity. A key component of this work will also be supporting pastors' wives, so they are best equipped to love and support a husband in ministry.  We desire to see women grow in wisdom and their personal walk, as they serve in a valuable role where much is at stake.

The hope of the gospel is not only eternal salvation, but life more abundantly, every day that we walk with Christ.  This is central to our mission.  In the book of Jonah, a reluctant prophet delivers the Word of God, and thousands are saved - then he leaves.  In the book of Nahum, roughly 100 years later, the same people group is set aside for wrath, having turned from repentance and towards great evil.  Our heart is to water with discipleship the seeds that have been planted with evangelism, so the churches of Peten can be strengthened and established, for this generation and eternity to come.

Peten Guatemala is home to the Q'eqchi' people, an indigenous group in the “Heart of the Mayan World.”  The Q'eqchi' are formally considered a reached people, but only 20% are evangelical Christians.  The Q'eqchi' Bible translation project was only completed in 2023. It is our desire to come alongside these new and growing believers, and new and growing churches, to facilitate growth in individuals and the Body.

Idolatry still echoes throughout the region.  Even many professing Christians weave in cultural practices of cosmology, animism, and divination.  God alone has the power to save, and He has done a mighty work in Peten.  He calls and invites us to partner with Him, and it is our desire to answer that call as we walk alongside our brothers and sisters in Peten as they grow into Christ who is the head.

As we prepare, and as we go, our greatest need is partners who will pray with us and provide financial support for the work that God is doing in Guatemala.  If you are interested in being a co-laborer as we carry out the Great Commission, please visit our giving page.
